IBM Advances in Quantum Computing, Promise Future-Proof Technology
The company's new approach, which involves improved code and qubit placement, reduces the physical qubits needed for error correction, making fault-tolerant quantum computing more feasible. While practical error correction remains an unsolved problem, these advances increase confidence in the possibility of building reasonably sized quantum computers. IBM recently announced two new quantum processors, Condor and Heron. While Condor boasts over 1,000 qubits, Heron is faster and less error-prone despite having fewer qubits. Heron represents the future direction of IBM's quantum development, focusing on maximizing the utility of qubits rather than increasing their number. IBM also plans to build its first fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029, a significant milestone in the quantum computing timeline.
The global quantum computing market, valued at USD 866 million in 2023, is expected to reach USD 4,375 million by 2028, growing at a CAGR of 38.3%. This growth is driven by the rising adoption of quantum computing across various industries and sectors and increasing investments in technology. However, stability and error correction issues remain significant, with a commercially helpful quantum computer requiring many physical qubits to create error-free logical qubits.
