Global Ion Exchange Resins Market Dynamics

Driver: Increasing nuclear power generation in emerging economies

The rapid expansion of emerging economies such as China and India, is expected to drive demand for energy. Nuclear power is one of the most environment-friendly source to generate electricity on large scale. The increasing awareness regarding climate change is expected to drive demand for nuclear power generation in the coming years. In the nuclear power industry, ion exchange resins are used for softening and demineralizing of cooling tower and boiler feed water. In the Chemical and Volume Control System (CVCS), ion exchange resins remove radioactive and non-radioactive ions from process and wastewater, which ensures the overall safety and efficiency of the reactor.

According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), the global nuclear capacity is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 1.6% from 2016 to 2040. It is also the second-fastest-growing source of energy after renewable energy. Major contributors to this growth would be non-OECD members, such as China and India. According to a 2021 report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on International Status and Prospects of Nuclear Power, 28 members, who do not have operational nuclear power facilities, are planning to have nuclear energy in their mix of energy sources. By 2030–2035, 10-12 members plan to operate nuclear power reactors. The major countries, other than China, which has 40 percent of the planned nuclear reactors under development, are Russia, India and China with 69 percent.

Restraint: Volatility in raw material prices

The major raw material used for manufacturing of ion exchange resins is polystyrene which when reacted with sulfonate group form cation exchanger or amine group to form anion exchanger. Polystyrene is a synthetic aromatic hydrocarbon polymer made from the monomer styrene. This means that the supply and prices of polystyrene rely wholly on the fluctuating price trends of the oil industry. The global market prices of crude oils have been badly affected by the Russia-Ukraine war; the latter has surpassed the hundred-dollar mark per barrel, as this has brought its price to a higher price due to the restriction of oil supply from Russia, being the earth's third biggest producer of petroleum and liquid fuels. The supply shortages in the market were further dented by the conflict with sanctions placed on Russia by most other countries.

This has meant that raw material price volatility has been quite volatile to create erratic price trends in the ion exchange resins market.

The price volatility has negative impacts on the margin of profit for the manufacturers of ion exchange resins, and it leads to rising final product prices. As an illustration, in January 2022, DuPont (US) declared a global price increase for its ion exchange resins by 15%. The increase in price allowed the company to continue to provide a consistent supply of ion exchange resins to the end users while catering to the major hike in the cost of raw material and logistics.

Opportunity: Rapid industrialization in emerging economies

Rapid industrialization in emerging economies such as India, China, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, and Thailand is expected to fuel the demand for ion exchange resins in these economies. The introduction of favorable industrial policies, government initiatives and foreign direct investments (FDIs) has fuelled industrialization in these countries. For instance, the Make in India initiative of the Government of India is anticipated to help the industrialization in India grow by 12-14% every year thereby improving the manufacturing sector.

FDI has been rising in Indonesia over the past years primarily due to a solid consumer goods market in the country. The Indonesian economy had surpassed two years of immense growth mainly driven by high domestic consumption and also that of FDI. In 2023, the Indonesian ministry of investment observed that FDI in the country was reported to have reached an amount of USD 47.3 billion. This amount recorded a 13.7% rise from that in 2022. In China, government policies, including tax incentives like exemptions or payments of value-added tax (VAT) or Enterprise Income Tax (EIT), import tax, and other tax liabilities, will further be the factors that should boost industrialization in China.

Challenge: Lack of effective water treatment regulations in emerging economies

The emerging economies are currently lagging behind the developed economies in terms of adopting stringent regulatory water treatment and emission standards, which can pose a challenge for the growth of ion exchange resins market in Asia Pacific, South America, and Middle East & Africa. More than 80% of diseases such as malaria, cholera, diarrhoea, and typhoid are generally caused by consumption of polluted of water or due to presence of polluted water bodies near residential areas. The lack of stringent regulations leads to disposing of pollutants from industrial areas into water bodies causing water pollution, and thereby causing spread of diseases.

In emerging economies such as India, South Africa, Bangladesh, and Indonesia, lack of stricter water treatment regulations often leads to use of inadequate water treatment regulations. Entities depend on low-cost and less effective water treatment methods such as solar water disinfection, chlorination or other basic filtration systems. These water treatment methods fail repeatedly to remove dangerous contaminants like heavy metals and pathogens, thus putting the health of people in danger. Apart from this problem, a shortage of finances makes the development of and operation of infrastructures related to modern water treatment technology hard, which continues to act as a kind of limitation for the efforts towards ensuring safe and quality water supply.

Based on the End-use industry, the power end-use industry accounted for the highest market share in the Ion Exchange Resins and is expected to maintain its dominance during the forecast period.

The power end-use industry holds a significant market share in the ion exchange resins market due to several factors. Ion exchange resins are essential for water treatment and purification processes to ensure efficient operations. They play an important role in removing impurities from water used in cooling systems, boilers and steam generation, which helps in preventing scaling and corrosion of equipment. This becomes critical in thermal power plants, where purity of circulating water is to be maintained at very high level to ensure optimized efficiency and prolonging the lifespan of the system. By employing both cation and anion exchange resins, power plants effectively treat water to meet stringent water quality standards. Thus, ion exchange resins play an important role in maintaining integrity and performance of water systems in the power industry.

Ion exchange resins are also used for treatment of wastewater released during power generation, which helps in effectively removing all forms of harmful contaminants, such as heavy metals, fluorides among other forms of toxic substances. Such treatment helps in not only meeting environmental regulations but also yields water that can be safely discharged or reused.

Based on type, cationic resins segment is expected to hold the largest market share during the forecast period.

Cationic resins are extensively used for water softening and water purification applications as an acid catalyst in both domestic and industrial sectors. The water treatment process depends on presence of total dissolved in water or solution, either using ion exchange or any other treatment method. The cationic resins are further categorized into strong acid cationic resins and weak acid cationic resins.

Strong acid cationic resins can dissociate readily, which makes the exchangeable sodium and hydrogen ions readily available across a broad pH range. This unique property of strong acid cationic resins allows them to operate independently of solution’s pH, allowing their usage in various applications. These resins are used in hydrogen form for de-cationization processes and in sodium form for water softening.

Weak acid cationic resins are different from strong acid cationic resins, as they have carboxylic acid as functional group instead of sulfonic group. The difference in functional group, helps in increasing the ion exchange capacity of the weak acid cationic resins with an increase in the pH of the solution. This limits the application of weak acid cationic resins and are used in dealkalization, treatment of highly saline water, and partial demineralization.

Market Definition

Ion exchange resins are insoluble polymers and are prepared by cross-linking polystyrenes that contain various functional groups. It acts as a medium for ion exchange reactions, consisting of a polymer matrix to which ion exchange sites are attached. Charged functional groups participate in these sites, attracting and facilitating ion-exchange with other ions carrying a different charge. Ion-exchange resins are usually used in the form of white or yellow porous microbead, membrane, or granular material, though other forms such as sheets are also used. Ion-exchange resins are of two major types, namely cation exchange resins, which attract positive ions, and anion exchange resins, which attract negative ions. Ion exchange resins find applications in various end use industries like power, chemical & petrochemical, food & beverage, pharmaceutical, electrical & electronics, metal & mining, among other industrial operations aimed at system efficiency, reduction of energy consumption, and extension of equipment life.
