Competitive Intelligence on the Evolution of Global XEV Aftermarket by Propulsion (BEV, HEV, PHEV), Components (Tires, Batteries, E-Compressors, E-Motors, Integrated Starter Alternators, DC/AC Inverters, Onboard Chargers), Region (China, APAC excl. China, Europe, NA, RoW) - Global Forecast to 2035

Overview

The global XEV aftermarket was estimated at USD 59.00 billion in 2024. It is projected to reach USD 195.07 billion by 2035, registering a CAGR of 11.5% from 2024 to 2035. The XEV aftermarket is driven by the rising sales of EVs and the increasing share of these vehicles in the global parc. In 2024, the penetration of XEVs in the light vehicle parc was ~5%. It is projected to reach ~17% by 2035. In terms of volume, the light vehicle XEV parc is projected to reach 258.4 million units by 2035.

There is a gradual increase in demand for maintenance, repair, and replacement components for XEVs due to the prolonged use of these vehicles. Some of the major trends in the XEV aftermarket services include battery refurbishing, remanufacturing, over-air updates, and AI-enabled diagnostics; this makes the XEV aftermarket different from the conventional (ICE) aftermarket.

The rise in e-commerce for automotive parts and component distribution is expected to bring out substantial changes as they enable OEMs to reach their target customers directly and offer a wider variety of products. Governments across the world are pushing for initiatives related to sustainable practices, building a truly circular economy. The integration of advanced technologies is further positioning XEV aftermarket as a critical growth segment of the automotive industry.

XEV Aftermarket Market

Attractive Opportunities in the XEV Aftermarket Market

EUROPE

The efforts by governments across Europe to achieve net-zero carbon emissions have led to an increased rate of adoption of XEVs, which is expected to drive the demand for XEV aftermarket components in the region.

OES and IAM focus on making their XEV product and service offerings more affordable for customers by offering loyalty benefits or customized maintenance packages.

OEMs are expected to be major players in the XEV aftermarket component space owing to the dependence of XEVs on proprietary software offered by OEMs.

The growth of the XEV aftermarket can be attributed to the increasing adoption of XEVs.

The growth in sales of XEV aftermarket components is driven by the rising adoption of digitalization across the value chain and the entry of e-commerce in the XEV aftermarket.

Global XEV Aftermarket Market Dynamics

Driver: BEVs per mile maintenance cost to be significantly cheaper

The cost of maintenance per mile for BEVs is lower than that of ICE and hybrid vehicles, which can be attributed to fewer moving parts. BEVs do not need oil changes, exhaust system repairs, and complex transmission maintenance, unlike ICE vehicles, while HEVs and PHEVs still incur some of these costs due to their dual powertrains. Although BEVs have relatively high tire replacement frequency and potentially expensive repairs to components like batteries, their day-to-day upkeep—such as brake wear—is reduced due to regenerative braking, driving down the overall per-mile maintenance cost. The per-mile maintenance costs for BEV, PHEV, HEV, and ICE are ~USD 0.062, USD 0.093, USD 0.099, and USD 0.105, respectively. BEVs offer a cost advantage, which makes them an increasingly economical choice over time despite the higher upfront investment compared to their ICE, HEV, and PHEV counterparts.

Restraint: Significant share of OES in XEV aftermarket

In the XEV aftermarket, OES is expected to have an edge over independent aftermarket players due to the major dependency of XEVs on proprietary software. This edge is expected to solidify further as the population of XEV vehicles under a five-year warranty increase. OES channels benefit from access to proprietary software updates, which are critical for the upkeeping of EVs. This gives OES an edge in ensuring a sustained recurring revenue stream that IAM providers may struggle to compete with. Additionally, OEMs are strengthening OES dominance through loyalty programs and repair and maintenance subscriptions, thus locking in customers. At the same time, IAM channels face challenges sourcing EV-specific parts and keeping pace with rapidly evolving technology. As a result, the OES channel is likely to lead, leveraging its direct link to OEM innovation and infrastructure, especially for the growing segment of newer EVs still under warranty. IAM contributed a 7% share in the EV maintenance space in 2024. This share is projected to reach 15% by 2030, owing to increasing investments in training, tools, and certifications tailored to EV-specific needs.

Opportunity: Disruption of aftermarket products and services by EVs

Digitalization will play a key role in the proliferation of XEV spare parts. A rise in e-commerce will lead to online players offering more comprehensive service packages and a wider product portfolio. DIY culture will also play a key role in increasing demand for XEV aftermarket parts in some regions. Online telematics and diagnostics software on EVs provide owners with predictive maintenance capabilities. It provides detailed data on battery performance, motor efficiency, and system status and empowers technicians with actionable insights, thereby providing an opportunity for OEMs with a method to monetize such service and generate a recurring revenue stream. OEMs such as Tesla offer OTA updates; mobile service units allow repairs at customer locations; Ford offers EV predictive maintenance & telematics to monitor EV health; and Rivian offers a FleetOS platform for tracking, maintenance scheduling, and charging optimization.

Challenge: Disruptions in supply chain leading to increased costs of components for local industries

Supply chain disruptions are driven by shortages, logistics challenges, geopolitical issues, and environmental events, which lead to increased component costs in the local aftermarket. As seen in automotive aftermarket trends, repair shops and consumers face higher prices and delays. While resilience strategies are emerging, their implementation adds to the overall costs, which indicates that elevated prices are likely to persist in the near term. The supply chain of most EV components is consolidated with a few major countries. This makes the global supply chain susceptible to cost pressures in case of any disruption. However, globally, countries are likely to engage actively in supply chain diversification and de-risking exercises.

Tires component estimated to lead the XEV aftermarket

In EVs, tires are emerging as a key driver of aftermarket demand due to the need for frequent replacement driven by the unique characteristics of EV design and performance. The instant torque and heavier weight of EVs—owing to substantial battery packs—accelerate tire wear, requiring more regular swaps than traditional vehicles.

In EVs, tires are replaced at an interval of 35,000-40,000 km, whereas, in ICE vehicles, tires are replaced at an interval of 45,000-50,000 km. In contrast, core components such as batteries, electric motors, and electric compressors are engineered for exceptional longevity, often designed to last the vehicle’s lifetime with minimal maintenance requirements.

However, the costs can be exceptionally high when EV maintenance or repairs are required—due to rare failures, accidents, or degradation over extended periods. Specialized labor, proprietary parts, and the complexity of high-voltage systems drive these expenses, making even minor interventions a significant investment for EV owners.

Europe to lead XEV aftermarket

Europe is projected to be the largest market for EV aftermarket services by 2035. Strict rules, including the possible ban on new gas-powered car sales between 2030 and 2035, are enabling the shift toward EVs. This is likely to translate into a growing number of vehicles requiring battery fixes, software upgrades, and spare parts. In addition, in Germany, France, and Norway, there is great public awareness about greener travel, with governments providing support through subsidies and tax perks. It is important to note that advanced charging networks and battery technologies keep EVs on the road longer, thereby raising the need for aftermarket care. Also, Europe’s major automakers are already shifting their expertise to EV solutions, contributing to a competitive aftermarket industry.
