The composition of marine lubricants primarily consists of base stocks and additives. These base stocks are heavy distillates, low wax, severely refined fractions of crude oil. Additives are then added to these base stocks for achieving properties such as resistance to corrosion, anti-oxidation, higher viscosity index, and high melting point among others. Additives significantly help in reducing the exhaust gas emissions, fuel consumption, and volume of oil required, thereby improving the longevity of lubricants. The marine engines takes the major market share of transmission fluids due to huge engine size coupled with smaller drain intervals, thus, leading to high lubricant consumption. The new technologies like exhaust gas scrubbers, selective catalytic reduction, exhaust gas recirculation, and blending-on-board among others are enhancing the efficiency of marine lubricants.
