Cummins Inc. (US) has designed hydrogen engines for On and Off-highway vehicles. The company has partnered and signed letters of intent with various OEMs and equipment manufacturers worldwide. The company is partnering with OEMs like Tata Motors Limited (India), Buhler Industries Inc. (Canada), and Taylor Machine Works Inc. (US). Cummins Inc. has developed engines using different combustion technologies like Port Fuel Injection-Spark Ignition (PFI-SI) (6.7-liter) and High-Pressure Direct Injection (HPDI) (15-liter), which helps the company satisfy the demands of both On-highway and Off-highway customers. This makes Cummins Inc. a market runner in the H2-ICE market.

J C Bamford Excavators (UK) began with the development of hydrogen engines with an initial funding of USD 108.3 Million in 2021. The company developed a hydrogen engine focused on off-highway applications. The hydrogen engine produced by JCB is a lower power-output engine that makes use of PFI-SI technology. To date, the company has produced more than 50 hydrogen combustion engines and began with on-road trials for its hydrogen engines. The company is expected to dominate the off-highway market for hydrogen engines in the coming years.

Ashok Leyland (India) partnered with Reliance Industries Limited (India) to develop hydrogen combustion engines for trucks. The companies began testing the engine in 2022. In 2023, Ashok Leyland and Reliance Industries Limited launched the hydrogen internal combustion engine truck at the India Energy Week in Bangalore. The engine makes use of the PFI-SI combustion approach.  This engine is expected to be used in the Ashok-Leyland (19-35 Tonne) category trucks. According to industry experts, the companies have produced a few trucks powered by these engines and are testing them in their factories.

MAN (Germany) is expected to be the first European truck manufacturer to launch trucks equipped with hydrogen combustion engines. The company has developed a 16.8-liter heavy engine. The engine makes use of the Direct Injection (DI) combustion approach. The engine is meant for Long Haul trucks and can be used for Off-highway vehicles. The company initially plans to produce around 200 trucks that will be delivered to the company’s customers in Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Iceland, and other non-European countries by 2025. The company is expected to dominate the European market for hydrogen engines in the coming years.

HD Hyundai Infracore (South Korea) designed hydrogen ICEs for construction equipment. Hyundai Infracore and HOERBIGER have partnered together for the development of
H2-ICE, in which Hyundai will use the PFI injectors from HOERBIGER in the hydrogen engine. The company is expected to launch the prototype engine by the end of 2024 and start full-scale production by 2025. The engine designed by the company is expected to be equipped in Hyundai’s construction equipment worldwide and penetrate the market in the off-highway segment.
