The announcement by the Danish government to make domestic flights in Denmark fossil fuel-free, driving demand for SAF fuel
Denmark is taking bold steps towards a more sustainable aviation industry. It has set a very ambitious target of making all flights within its borders fossil fuel-free and reducing carbon emissions by 70% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. Nominating Report published by the Nordic Initiative for Sustainable Aviation, NIRAS, together with other researchers at the University of Southern Denmark, has expressed through the report that there is potential development towards producing sustainable aviation fuel locally. According to the report, SAF can be made using carbon dioxide and hydrogen, based on the technologies Denmark already uses to convert methane into sustainable fuels for aircraft and heavy vehicles. This technological foundation is a precursor to further breakthroughs in Denmark's production of SAF.
Danish key players in the aviation and energy sectors are already working to bring this vision to life. Copenhagen Airport, together with A.P. Moller–Maersk, DFDS, SAS, and Ørsted, is developing the world's first sustainable fuel production facility, which will produce sustainable fuels for road, marine, and air transport, making Denmark a forerunner in green energy solutions.
Meanwhile, Danish airline Alsie Express has demonstrated the test run of operating a domestic flight route on pure SAF: another small but significant step towards bringing a fossil-fuel-free flying fleet to Denmark. The closer connection to Alsie Express and Sønderborg, combined with Danfoss, points toward increased momentum for the take-up within the Danish aviation sector.
