NTN HAPS Market Drivers:
Technology has made substantial breakthroughs in solar cell efficiency, battery density, sophisticated materials, and control (stability) to make HAPS a technically and commercially viable product. The progress of HAPS technology will also benefit from current breakthroughs in electric mobility, electric aircraft, and unmanned aerial mobility (cargo airships). LEO satellites are expensive in capital expenditure (CAPEX) and continue to have drawbacks. The value proposition of HAPS is based on decreased latency, persistence, mobility, and rapid capability insertion. In the future, increasing technological capabilities will also lower the production and operational cost curve. Lower costs and benefits will allow the business case to be closed in the chosen military and commercial applications.
In addition to connecting hard-to-reach places and people, it is noted that as drones, and even electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles capable of carrying people, become more common, NTN such as HAPS will become more important because network coverage will need to extend above the ground in ways that terrestrial base stations are not designed for.
Softbank claims that this, along with connecting an estimated 3.7 billion people, is why it is investing in HAPS research. When Alphabet's Loon business unit was closed early this year, Softbank bought its intellectual property. Softbank's HAPSMobile JV aims to speed efforts toward HAPS commercialization, to launch mass production of HAPS aircraft in 2027.
