Dental Ceramics Market by Type (Oxides, Silicates, Glass Ceramics, and Others), by Application (Crowns & Bridges, Braces, Implants, Inlays and Onlays, and Others) - Global Trends & Forecasts to 2020
Dental Ceramics are porcelain materials used in dentistry to create biocompatible realistic dental repairs such as crowns and bridges, braces, implants, inlays and onlays, among others. They are an effective way to replace any damaged part of the teeth or put additional devices for getting the proper shape of teeth. Properties of ceramics such as chemical inertness, aesthetics, high toughness, and wear resistance make them the ideal choice for making dental devices. There are basically two types of ceramic restoration: Metal-Ceramic combination, and full ceramic.
As restorative materials dental ceramics have found less application in the pre-molar and molar areas due to their inability to withstand functional forces in the cavity areas. Dental ceramics have major applications in the posterior long-span fixed partial prosthetic restorations and structures over dental implants. Dental ceramics have low fracture toughness as compared to their metal counterparts.
The major drivers of the global dental ceramics market are rising number of cosmetic and implant surgeries across various regions of the world, increase in awareness about dental implants & their benefits, and increase in number of cases of periodontal disorders. The major restraints in this market are affordability, economic slowdown and limited reimbursement.
The oxides in dental ceramics mainly consist of silicon dioxide and potash feldspar. In this type of dental ceramics, sometimes fillers are also added which consist of leucite, lithium disilicate or fluoroapatite. Another product type of dental ceramics is glass ceramics, which were first developed in 1950s. A glass ceramic is a multiphase solid comprising a residual glass phase with a finely distributed crystalline phase. They are used to make the enamel portion of teeth. Aluminum oxide dental ceramics are used where more bending strength is required. They are only suitable for fabrication of crown frames with subsequent veneering. These dental ceramics have strength of 500 Mpa, but have poor translucency. The zirconia oxide ceramics uses a mixture of zirconium oxide and aluminum oxide as a framework to achieve a noticeable increase in the flexural strength at the core.
Crown is basically a cap placed on tooth to protect it from fracture and sensitivity. Apart from this, bridge is a fixed replacement for missing teeth, with support from adjacent teeth. Inlay is an indirect filling placed on teeth whereas onlay is a more extensive filling. Implants are basically a pillar or post placed into bone to act as a replacement to root of a tooth, on which a denture – fixed or removable is placed.
Companies in the global dental ceramics market are moderately fragmented, 3M Espe (Germany), Ceramtec (Germany), Jensen Dental Incorporated (U.S.), Coorstek Medical (U.S.), Ferro-Ceramic Grinding Inc. (U.S.), Small Precision Tools Inc. (U.S.), Noritake Co. Limited (Japan), Saint Gobain (France), Corning Inc. (U.S.), and New West Dental Ceramics (U.S.). The companies in this market need to compete with each other with respect to prices and a wide product range with advanced technology in order to meet market requirements.
