m-Xylene(1,3-Dimethylbenzene) is consumed primarily for the production of isophthalic acid. It is separated from the mixed xylene stream that results from the refining of crude oil. m-Xylene is used as solvent; intermediate for dyes & organic synthesis. It is also used to make coatings, plastics, dyes, fibreglass, auto bodies, outboard motors, industrial cooling fans and vaulting poles.
Isophthalic acid, an aromatic dicarboxylic acid synthesized from meta-xylene, serves to produce aramids, polyesters, highly performance electroinsulating enamel and alkyd resin without oil. The largest use of purified isophthalic acid (PIA) is as an intermediate in the production of unsaturated polyester resins, followed by polyester and alkyd resins (mainly for surface coatings) and inks, reinforced plastics and packaging applications. Isophthalic acid is also used as an agent to alter the properties of PET resin for the production of soft drink bottles. Isophthalic acid is a key ingredient in FRP markets for such products as marine, automotive, and corrosion resistant pipes and tanks. Polyesters containing PIA are also used extensively in industrial coatings applications for home appliances, automobiles, aluminum siding, and metal office furniture. Powder coatings formulated with PIA are used in exterior applications such as patio furniture, lawn mowers, and vending machines. All these applications of PIA are described in detail in this report.
