Advanced Energy Recovery System Market - By Type, Technology & Geography (2014-2019)
Automotive industry is been experiencing an upsurge of energy harnessing applications with the engagement of many automotive manufacturers, competing to develop their own systems to harness the heat wasted. These developments have been triggered owing to the increasing demand for fuel efficient vehicles. One such energy recovery system is Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS). The KERS is an automotive system which is used to recover kinetic energy from the heat wasted during the braking process. This energy can be stored in reservoirs such as flywheels, batteries etc. and can be utilized as an ancillary power when the vehicle is in motion. KERS can be broadly categorized into electric KERS, mechanical KERS and hydraulic KERS. In these systems, the braking energy is captured in different forms of energy which is then sent to the wheels as and when required. The other form of the energy recovery system which is currently applied in vehicles is Exhaust Heat Recovery System (EHRS) which basically turns the wasted heat formed inside the exhaust system, into energy. In this recovery system, the heat energy is converted to electrical signals using a thermo-electric generator (TEG).
Many key automakers such as, Peugeot, McLaren Mercedes, Toyota, Porsche and Mazdaare exploring this system. Owing to the recent environmental issues of pertaining to vehicle emissions, this proves to be a better technology which not only provides high energy conversion efficiency but also has a low impact on the environment, with reduced emissions. In addition to this, the system has a long lifespan and a wide working temperature range. The use of these systems can help in achieving emission limits by reducing the carbon dioxide output.
