Ring Main Unit Market Dynamics
Driver: Focus on the strengthening of power distribution infrastructure
After a small decline in 2020, global electricity demand increased by 6% in 2021. It was the highest annual increase in absolute terms (nearly 1500 TWh) and the largest percentage gain since the financial crisis ended in 2010, according to IEA Market Report 2022. China accounted for over half of the worldwide growth, with demand increasing by 10%. A quick economic recovery, combined with more extreme weather conditions than in 2020, notably a colder-than-average winter, boosted global electricity demand. The industrial sector, followed by the commercial and services sectors, and finally, the residential sector, contributed the most to the demand increase.
The US experiences more blackouts than any other developed nation; power outages last more than an hour and have increased steadily over the past few years, costing American businesses about USD 150 billion per year. For instance, in February 2021, Texas saw record-low temperatures, and snow and ice made highways impassable. The state's electric grid operator lost control of the power supply, leaving millions without power. The main reasons behind the increasing number of blackouts are aging infrastructure, lack of investments, and lack of clear policy to modernize the grid.
Ring main units are used to provide an uninterrupted power supply by making a ring of the power supply network so that supply can be fed from the alternative source on the failure of the primary source of power supply. A ring main unit is an all-in-one solution because it is safe, easy to install, and maintain-free, helping utilities improve network reliability and uptime and reduce operating costs.
Restraint: Emission regulations restricting the use of SF6
SF6 is also classified as a "greenhouse gas" (GHG). SF6 is the most potent GHG in global warming potential among the group of chemicals known as fluorinated gases (GWP). Strict measures have been put in place to limit SF6 emissions, including restrictions on its use. In 1997, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began looking into SF6 in the US. It became mandatory to record equipment with a nameplate capacity of 17,820 lb. or higher in 2012. As a result, emissions have decreased significantly.
Regulatory agencies are increasingly examining SF6 due to its environmental impact. The EU F-gas regulations of 2006 and 2014 (in the framework of its F-Gas Regulation No. 517/2014) tightened the restrictions on the use of SF6 in ring main units. In 2022, a second revision of the legislation will review new technologies on the market and whether it is possible to restrict the use of SF6 even more. SF6 emissions from electrical equipment are substantially higher in the US than in European countries, and the Air Resource Board California reduced the permissible annual emissions from 10% in 2010 to 1% in 2020.
This could lead to even stricter restrictions on the use of SF6. Most regulations that may eventually govern the use of SF6 deal with the chemically related group of fluorinated gases known as F-gases. This includes both hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which have a short lifetime in the atmosphere, and perfluorocarbons (PFCs), which have a long lifetime. More environmentally friendly alternatives have largely replaced HFCs and PFCs. As F-gas rules become more stringent, they will have a greater impact on SF6; this will affect the ring main unit market.
Opportunities: 1.2.3.2 Growing deployment of smart grids and digitization
The development of smart grids is essential if the global community is to achieve shared goals for energy security, economic development, and climate change mitigation. Smart grids enable increased demand response and energy efficiency, integration of variable renewable energy resources and electric vehicle recharging services, while reducing peak demand and stabilizing the electricity system. Large-scale pilot projects are urgently needed in all regions of the world to test various business models and then adapt them to local circumstances. Countries and regions will use smart grids for different purposes; emerging economies may leapfrog directly to smart electricity infrastructure, while OECD countries are already investing in incremental improvements to existing grids and small-scale pilot projects. The RMU of the future is safe, robust, cyber-secure, green, and digital, and able to meet the demands of smart grid evolution with high distributed energy resources integration.
Challenges: High competition from players of the unorganized sector
Low-cost counterfeits that imitate original products can be found at local marketplaces. These products are usually exact copies of high-end products offered by major players. Though these counterfeit products are cost-efficient, they are prone to accidents such as short circuits, leading to fires, shocks, or explosions. These products are not sold in accordance with the norms and conditions set by the manufacturers. This market has flourished with the sales of products on online marketplaces, where customers are unable to physically verify the products. These challenges can best be overcome by educating customers about such counterfeits.

Gas-insulated segment, by insulation type, is expected to be the largest segment during the forecast period
The gas-insulated segment is expected to be the largest segment during the forecast period. Gas-insulated ring main units find applications in railway systems, wind power plants, power grids, underground installations, and mining. The gas-insulated segment is expected to have a larger market share than other segments due to its compact size, better functionality, and climatic resistance.
By installation, the outdoor segment is expected to be the fastest-growing segment in the global ring main unit market during the forecast period
By installation, the ring main unit market has been segmented into indoor and outdoor. The outdoor segment is expected to grow at a higher rate than the indoor segment during the forecast period. Distribution utilities are the major end users of outdoor ring main units. Growing investments in the renewable sector will lead to a rise in the number of renewable power plants that would require an increase in the distribution network capacities, which, in turn, is expected to propel the demand for outdoor ring main units.
“Asia Pacific: The fastest-growing ring main unit market.”
Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest-growing market for ring main units between 2022 and 2027, followed by Europe and North America. Capacity additions, increasing electricity demand, and industrialization projects in countries such as China, Japan, India, and South Korea are the main reasons spurring the growth of the ring main unit market in the region. In India, factors such as rural electrification, the adoption of smart grids, and substation automation projects are increasing the demand for ring main units.
Key Market Players
The ring main unit market is dominated by a few major players that have a wide regional presence. The major players are ABB Ltd (Switzerland), Siemens (Germany), Eaton (Ireland), Schneider Electric (France), LS Electric Co., Ltd (South Korea). Between 2018 and 2022, the companies adopted sales contracts as their key strategy to capture a larger share of the ring main unit market.

The study involved major activities in estimating the current size of the ring main unit market. Exhaustive secondary research was done to collect information on the peer and parent markets. The next step was to validate these findings, assumptions, and sizing with industry experts across the value chain through primary research. Both top-down and bottom-up approaches were employed to estimate the complete market size. Thereafter, market breakdown and data triangulation were used to estimate the market size of the segments and subsegments.
Secondary Research
This research study on the ring main unit market involved the use of extensive secondary sources, directories, and databases, such as Hoovers, Bloomberg, Businessweek, Factiva, International Energy Agency, and BP Statistical Review of World Energy, to identify and collect information useful for a technical, market-oriented, and commercial study of the global market. The other secondary sources included annual reports, press releases, and investor presentations of companies, white papers, certified publications, articles by recognized authors, manufacturer associations, trade directories, and databases.
Primary Research
The ring main unit market comprises several stakeholders such as ring main unit manufacturers, boiler manufacturers, manufacturers of subcomponents of ring main units, manufacturing technology providers, and technology support providers in the supply chain. The demand side of this market is characterized by the rising demand for ring main units in the electric distribution network. The supply side is characterized by rising demand for contracts from the distribution utilities, and mergers and acquisitions among big players. Various primary sources from both the supply and demand sides of the market were interviewed to obtain qualitative and quantitative information. Following is the breakdown of primary respondents:
