Coal bed methane (CBM) is an unconventional natural gas that is adsorbed in coal seams. It is a substitute for conventional natural gas in all types of applications. It is used for residential, commercial, industrial (including for ethylene and NGL production), transportation purposes.
CBM production worldwide is projected to rise from 3,654 billion cubic feet in 2011 to 5,150 billion cubic feet in 2021 at a CAGR of 3.5%. Currently, there is no output from the ROW region; however, as a result of ongoing exploration, output is expected to get generated by 2021. During 2016-2021, global CBM production is expected to surge to 5.8%, increasing output from 3,881 billion cubic feet to 5,150 billion cubic feet. Russia is expected to grow at 34.6%, China 14.7%, Indonesia 14.9%, and Canada 11.1%. As North America is a comparatively developed market, it is expected to remain at almost the same levels while Australia is projected to grow at a rate of 7%.
In 2010, the industrial sector accounted for 39% of CBM production used, followed by the power generation sector at 31%. The residential, commercial, and transportation sectors accounted for 17%, 10%, and 3% of the total CBM production respectively.
